3 Tips For Recovering After A Knee Injury

Whether you’re out playing a sport or just getting out of the shower, there’s always a chance for something to go wrong and for you to sustain an injury. And because you use your knees for so many parts of your daily life, the knee is one of the most common places to have issues and injuries to your body. 

After you’ve had a knee injury like a tear in your meniscus and have done the initial care of the injury after the first 48 hours or so, it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to recover and regain your strength and range of motion.

To help you with this, here are three tips for recovering after a knee injury.  

Expect Pain For A Few Weeks To Months

Depending on the severity of the injury to your knee, you could have pain and discomfort in that area for a few weeks to a few months. So as you’re trying to rehab your knee and get things back to normal, you may need to wait until most of that pain has subsided before you really get working on this. 

If you didn’t already visit a doctor immediately after you were hurt, you might want to see one now so that they can confirm that you didn’t do too much damage to the area and that the knee is stable enough for you to walk on it and try to strengthen it. 

Use Your Feet To Change Directions

With many knee injuries, it’s not the bending of the knee that people have problems with but the twisting of the knee that can cause them issues. Knowing this, if you’re worried about keeping your knee stable when it’s twisting, you should make a conscious effort to avoid doing this at first. Rather, you should change directions using your feet as opposed to your knees.

To do this, you’ll want to turn the balls of your feet when you’re going to be changing the direction you’re going. This way, you won’t turn or twist the knee as much. 

Do The Right Exercises

There are all kinds of exercises that you can do to help to rebuild your knee and get this part of your body healing and strengthened after you’ve had an injury. 

First of all, before you do anything that would be considered exercise, you’ll want to make sure you warm your body up and stretch so that you don’t cause more damage. Then, when you’re starting out, you’ll want to do exercises that use the knee but don’t put too much stress and pressure on it, like swimming, walking, and a stationary bike.
