Playa Yelapa
About Playa Yelapa, Mexico
Playa Yelapa is one of the most secluded and beautiful beaches in all of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Most visitors to Mexico haven't even heard of Yelapa and it has been well hidden and off the beaten path as it has no road access and requires a 1-hour boat ride from Puerto Vallarta to visit its pristine shores. The village is quaint, beautiful, and is perfectly tucked into the tall jungle-covered mountains of the Sierra Madre. No cars, no stoplights, and no high rise can be found in Yelapa making it an excellent place for a quiet beach getaway.
Playa Yelapa is the main beach in the area and lies on the shores of the Bahia de Banderas (Bay of Banderas) in a remote part of the region and is a twenty-mile boat ride from Playa Los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta. It is precisely this remoteness that has kept the beach and the village from commercialization, as you typically see in Puerto Vallarta and other coastal towns. It is essentially one of Mexico’s last unspoiled beaches and will hopefully be kept that way. The crescent-shaped stretch of brilliant sand straddles the jungle on one side and the ocean on the other. It is lined with loungers, chairs, and umbrellas provided by a few bars and restaurants that are on the beach.
Yes, Yelapa is remote but it is definitely becoming increasingly popular among tourists. That being said hippies, backpackers, and beach bums have been visiting Yelapa for years and argue that there are now more tourists than ever. But still, Yelapa is much less congested than other destinations in the area and most visitors are just there for the day.
Yelapa has garnered some well-deserved attention among celebs for being so blissful and private. Bob Dylan, Dennis Hopper, Roland Emmerich, and many more have all visited this vacation paradise in order to escape the crowds. There is also a popular saying about the village and it goes like this “It is better to own a palapa in Yelapa, than a condo in Redondo” and that is a true statement.
