4 Exciting Things to Do in Everest

4 Exciting Things to Do in Everest

Everest is between Tibet and Nepal and is seen as the highest point on earth. It’s a tourist destination with unique attractions, breathtaking landscapes, and more adventures. Outlined below are four exciting things to do on Everest.

  1. Take part in the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon

The Everest Marathon is an annual international high-attitude adventure sport held on May 29. It celebrates Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic achievement as the first climbers to reach Mount Everest’s peak. The Everest Marathon was launched to honor these climbers’ accomplishments and to promote tourism in the Everest area. The race takes place in Nepal’s Khumbu Valley. The Everest Marathon’s course is not only demanding but also popular for high-attitude challenges.

To participate in the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, you must be aged 18 and above and be physically fit enough to cope with the hardships of high-altitude running. Since racing at high altitudes comes with some risks associated with low oxygen levels, acclimatizing the area several days before the marathon can help mitigate risk. High-altitude racing training and past marathon experience can help ensure you’re sufficiently prepared for the challenging course.

2. Do the Everest Base Camp trek

The Everest Base Camp trek is a trip from Kathmandu to the base camp of the highest peak in the world, with some of the best views, which include the peaks of:

  • Ama Dablam

  • Mount Everest

  • Pumori

  • Lhotse

Doing the Everest Base Camp trek allows you to enjoy and explore the following:

  • Sagarmatha National Park: It’s a natural world heritage site with most popular peaks and full of divine beauty

  • Lukla Flight: The trek begins with a fun, picturesque 30-minute Lukla flight where you’ll see the summit of Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Mt. Everest, and more. You’ll also get to enjoy the views of the landscapes of Nepal and the blue skies

  • Everest Base Camp: It’s a bucket list for most trekkers and the trek’s ultimate point

  • Kala Patthar: It’s the trek’s highest point. A morning hike to Kala Patthar allows you to enjoy the sunrise.

3. Explore the Sherpa culture

The Sherpa community is located in Nepal’s Everest area, which is high in the Himalayas. Taplejung, Dolakha, Solukhimbu, and Helambu are some of the popular regions where you can find this community. The Sherpas are known for their mountaineering skills, which make them excellent mountain guides. Some of the Sherpa food options to explore when visiting Everest include:

  • Thukpa: It’s a thick noodle soup with egg or meat and vegetables

  •  Alu Ko Roti: It’s made from flour, potato, and eggs

Butter tea and Thenthuk are other Sherpan foods you can try. There are also festivals unique to the Sherpa community, including Losar, which falls in February and celebrates the new year, and the Mani Rimdu festival, which falls in November or October.

4. Go to Everest Memorial

The Everest Memorial is a site in Nepal’s Everest region that acts as a memorial to celebrate those who have lost their lives in their quest to climb Mount Everest. The memorial bears the deceased climbers' nationalities, names, and dates. Visiting the Everest Memorial allows you to reflect on the sacrifices and risks that come with climbing Mt. Everest.
