Towing Checklist for Hybrid Off-Road Caravans
Being prepared is one of the most basic rules of caravaning. This rule is even more important for off-road adventures where the terrains are rough, and conditions are harsh. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced off-roader, there are basic rules to follow and checks to implement on every trip. In this post, we’ll explore some of the important things to check while setting up and getting your hybrid off-road caravan on the road.
Ensure All Latches Are Secure Before Setting Off
Before you get on the road, you should ensure your tow hybrid off-road caravan is securely hitched to the tow vehicle. Check the two shackles to ensure they’re securely linked, and inspect your trailer plug and breakaway wire.
Clean And Service Your Caravan
The caravan should be adequately cleaned before and after every trip. You should also do a thorough inspection of the tyres, wheel bearings, hubs and other parts of the caravan and tow vehicle. Ensure they’re all in perfect condition before you get on the road.
Check The Lights
Good lighting is important for off-road caravaning. Check to see if all the trailer lights are connected and working correctly. The signal lights (brake lights and turn signals) should also be in good condition for your safety and that of other road users.
Fill Up Your Water Tank
Before you leave home, you should fill the caravan’s water tank with water. Not only will you need the water when you’re out in a remote location, but a filled tank will also help you maintain a low centre of gravity.
Carry Spares
This is particularly important for long camping trips to remote areas. The last thing you want is a damaged vehicle that cannot be fixed right away. You must carry spares for things like tyres, tubes, fuses, plugs and other replaceable parts of your caravan.
Drive Carefully
Driving with a caravan is considerably different from regular driving. The attached caravan will affect the performance, speed, braking and acceleration of your vehicle. Some of the basic safe driving tips to keep in mind include:
Leave enough space between your vehicle and the one in front to allow longer distances for braking
Don’t make sudden lane changes. Keep your driving as smooth and gentle as possible.
Be careful when overtaking other vehicles. Consider the added length of your caravan and its effect on speed and acceleration.
Swing a little wider than usual when you need to turn the corner. This will give your camper enough room to get around the corner.
Pay Attention To Your Speed
Before you get on the road, check the recommended towing speed for your caravan. The maximum and recommended speed is often indicated in the caravan manual. The appropriate speed may also change based on the condition of the road and other factors. Ensure you maintain safe driving speeds at all times for your safety and comfort.
