Italian Football Teams — Who is the Best?
When it comes to club football, many often consider the English Premier League and the teams that compete there. But forget about Italy at your peril. The top Italian league, Serie A, has a whole host of top teams to consider. And with these top teams comes a lot of rivalry, exciting games and a lot of trophies during this sporting event.
So, in a country that lives football, who is the best? Will it be Juventus, Inter or AC Milan? Or maybe, there is another team that could be the top team. Read on to find out.
Juventus for the top
If we take into consideration simply which of these teams has been most successful, then Juventus will take the top spot. This club has won an impressive 36 Italian Serie A titles alongside a myriad of other trophies as well. Impressively, Juventus first won the Serie A title back in 1905 and has consistently won it ever since. Juventus' latest Serie A victory came in the 2019-20 season, though this was on the back of a nine-year winning streak. Additionally, the club has also won the Coppa Italia 14 times, Supercoppa Italiana 9 times and won two Intercontinental Cups.
Continuing its success outside of Italy, Juventus has also won the UEFA Champions League twice and the UEFA Europa League title three times. It remains one of the richest Italian clubs, which has helped it reach such heights.
AC Milan nipping at its heels
Of course, right behind we do have AC Milan. The club has not been as successful as Juventus, but has made some pretty impressive wins over the years. Yes, AC Milan only has 19 Serie A titles (the last scored in the 2021-22 season), but there are also five Coppa Italia titles and seven Supercoppa Italiana titles to throw into the mix as well. Outside of Italy, AC Milan is more successful than Juventus, which could explain why this is one of the most popular Italian teams on the international football scene.
Impressively, AC Milan has won the UEFA Champions League seven times and the UEFA Winner's Cup twice. In fact, the club has an extraordinary haul of 49 international and national titles under its belt.
Inter Milan slides in third
And there you have it, Inter comes in third with regard to title successes. Just like AC Milan, Inter has 19 Serie A titles at the time of writing. Impressively, though, Inter is the team to win it the most times in the last few years, winning in the 2020-21 season, as well as more recently in the 2023-24 season. On top of this, Inter has eight Coppa Italia and seven Supercoppa Italiana titles, which is very similar to that of the other two top teams.
Similar to AC Milan, Inter has more success internationally than Juventus. The club has won the UEFA Champions League three times as well as the UEFA Europe League three times and two Intercontinental Cups. At this time, Inter has 42 international and national titles to its name.
Honorable mentions
Of course, there are a number of other top Italian teams running these three close. AS Roma has won the Serie A three times, alongside 9 CoppaItalia and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. Similarly, SS Lazio has a solid record, with two Serie A titles to its name. Seven Coppa Italia and five Supercoppa Italiana titles round out its wins. The club has the distinction of being one of the oldest Italian clubs too, and still calls Rome its home.
However, while these stats are indicative of which are the most successful teams, popularity is a very different thing. And of course, any ardent fan of each individual team will have a lot to say about which one truly is the best.
