5 Ways to Stay Safe in Las Vegas That Visitors Should Know

If you head to Las Vegas, whether you go there with your family or on your own, you may feel like you want to cut loose while you’re there. You’ve probably heard the phrase that “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” and you regard that as an invitation to get a little wild. You might do things in the city that you wouldn’t at home, but that doesn’t mean you should act with completely reckless abandon.

Las Vegas saw nearly 8,000 violent crimes in 2023, and that should give you pause as you make your plans. It doesn’t mean there’s an inherent danger if you visit Sin City, but you still need to avoid certain behaviors if you want to get home from your trip safely.

In this article, we will talk about some of the ways you can stay safe in Las Vegas. By following our suggestions, you should make some happy memories and not regretful ones.

Stay in Well-Lit Areas

First, you should make sure that as you walk down the Strip or explore other parts of town, that you stay only in well-let areas. If you’re walking around at night, then many areas will have neon lights everywhere. You will encounter them in front of hotels, in lobbies, and many other places.

In back alleys, though, there’s very little light, and that’s a prime spot where someone might mug you. Crime flourishes in the dark. If you remember that and stay out of dark parking lots and other spots where there’s not much light and you notice few people around, you can probably avoid becoming a crime statistic.

Don’t Invite Anyone Up to Your Room Who You Don’t Know

You should also never invite anyone up to your room who you don’t know. Maybe you’re playing in the casino or having some drinks at a hotel bar and you meet someone who seems nice. If you invite them up to your room after only knowing them for half an hour, though, that’s probably asking for trouble.

You might get along fine with this person or this group of people when you get to your room, but maybe their whole personality will change once you’re out of the public eye together. They might try to rob you or do something else you didn’t expect.

Don’t Drink to Excess

If you choose to consume alcohol in Las Vegas, then know your limit, and don’t exceed it. Las Vegas functions as an adult playground, so there’s alcohol everywhere. That’s not by accident.

The casinos want to keep serving you drinks so that you will lower or completely lose your inhibitions. That’s often the key to making you withdraw more money from the ATM than you anticipated.

If you don’t want to bet your house on black at the roulette wheel, it’s best that you monitor your drinking carefully. If you find that you’re losing control, stop and go back to your room. If you need to count your drinks, then do that.

Don’t Flash Your Cash Around

If you have a wad of cash with you, keep it in your pocket and don’t make a spectacle out of yourself. Even if you get hot at the craps table and win a huge stack of chips, celebrating excessively might make you attract some unwanted attention.

If you have anything valuable, whether that’s money, a fancy watch, jewelry, or something else, know that if you take it outside the casino with you, you may have someone follow you to try to rob you. Obviously, you’d hope that this won’t happen, but the more you make yourself a target for thieves, the more likely you will attract a violent incident.

Don’t Speed or Drive Drunk

Maybe you drove to Las Vegas or rented a car while you’re there. If so, you can cruise down the Strip or through another part of the city, like Old Vegas.

No matter what part of town you decide to explore, though, you don’t ever want to speed or drive drunk. Pay attention to the speed limit and stick to it. If you consume any alcohol, then leave the car in the hotel’s parking garage.

If you need to go somewhere, then you can get an Uber instead. You’ll find many of them in this city to accommodate people who drank excessively.

If you follow all of these rules, then staying safe becomes much likelier.
