Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden, Vancouver
About Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden, British Columbia
The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is the very first Chinese garden in history to be built outside of the country of China. It is located in Vancouver, British Columbia’s Chinatown, and is the oldest of its kind in Canada.
This gorgeous public park strikes a stark contrast between the peaceful atmosphere of the gardens and the towering skyscrapers in the background, The mantra of the Chinese gardens is to "maintain and enhance the bridge of understanding between Chinese and western cultures, promote Chinese culture generally and be an integral part of the local community." The park was named after the revolutionist Dr. Sun Yat Sen, who essentially overthrew the Qing Dynasty to become the Republic of China’s first president. He had stayed in Vancouver many times in the past and had a strong connection with the Chinese culture of Vancouver.
Winter climates in the Vancouver area are similar to that of the city of Suzhou, China, and the designers of the park chose to use the same plant varieties to landscape the park. There are koi fish and turtles that call the ponds home.
