Fun Ways to Pass the Time on Your Next Trip

Fun Ways to Pass the Time on Your Next Trip

No matter where you go on vacation this year, there will inevitably be downtime where you and your fellow travelers will be bored while waiting for your adventure to begin. Luckily, there are so many ways to continue the fun, even if you are waiting for transportation or on a road trip. Read below for some inspiration on fun ways to pass the time on your next trip.

Always Have a Deck of Cards

For long layovers in the airport or downtime between activities, a deck of cards always comes in handy to help you pass the time. Playing card games offers a great alternative to just sitting and scrolling on your mobile phone and can allow friends and family members to partake in a bit of friendly competition. From Poker to Golf to Go Fish, there are hundreds of different kinds of card games that you can learn and teach others, and they will keep you entertained for hours. When you get sick of playing with the cards, you can even do building competitions to see who can build the best house of cards.

Play Online Slot Games

A great way to pass the time and maybe earn a little bit of money while doing it is to play slot games on your smartphone. If you want a source of endless entertainment, click here to find a variety of slot games to help you get through road trips, train rides, and airport layovers. Many of these types of games can be downloaded, meaning you can play them even if you don’t have cell reception. This is great if you are traveling to another country where your phone only works on wifi or if you are on a long flight or train ride where cell reception is not available.

Play Word Games

Whether it's buying a sudoku book in the airport gift shop or downloading a few apps on your phone, word games are a great way to stay entertained and train your brain as you play. There are a lot of apps out there now that offer a variety of fun games like word search and other puzzle games. Games like Wordle are growing in popularity because people all over the world play it every day and it is fun to see how well you do and then share your results with your friends. If you like a little challenge, then word games are the type of entertainment for you.

Join a Book Club

If you are doing a lot of traveling this summer and you have a lot of downtime, you might as well read a few books to later discuss with your friends when you get back. You can even start your own book club with a group of friends who will also be traveling a lot this summer. This way, you can each pick a different book and read then throughout the summer. Then, when you all get back to your routines, you will have something to talk about alongside sharing the adventures you went on. From the beach to the balcony of a hotel, reading a book is always a good way to make time go by easier, even if you enjoy the view you have.

Start A Travel Journal

Journaling is a fun activity for people who like to record what is going on in their lives and what better time to start than on a big trip? Spending a few minutes every day of your trip writing about what you have done so far is a great thing to do when you have some downtime and don’t know what to do with yourself. This record of events will be something that you can look back at for years to come and you will be grateful that you have it. Memories may fade, but if you have a written record of them, then they will stay stronger in your brain and you can share your travel stories with your children and grandchildren one day.

Listen to Podcasts and Audiobooks

It is easy to get lost in a good podcast or audiobook, especially if you are just sitting on a train or an airplane, waiting to get to your next destination. If you have a book that you have been wanting to read for a while but you get motion sickness on transportation, audiobooks are a great alternative. Additionally, if you have a favorite podcast that you listen to when you are cleaning the house or running errands, you can download a few episodes to your preferred podcast app so that you have them, even if you don’t have internet access.

Have a Storytelling Session

If you are on a trip with friends that you don’t see all of the time, downtime is a great time for you to catch up and tell recent stories about your lives. Retelling stories about past adventures is also a great way to get a laugh out of everyone and reignite the bond that brought you all together in the first place. If you have kids, storytelling is a great way to keep them entertained and keep them off of their screens for a while.

Explore the Places You Are In

Whether it’s an airport or a train station, make the most of your time by exploring the different shops and restaurants there. Some airports have unexpectedly fun features like massage centers, museums, and even movie theaters. This is also a great opportunity to eat at an airport restaurant that offers local cuisine. If you are waiting in a city where you have never been before, do some research about the local food and then go sit down and have a meal that has local dishes. Instead of just sitting in an uncomfortable chair for an hours-long layover, use the time to get some exercise and walk around the terminal. You never know what you will discover.

Traveling is always fun, but there will always be times when you have to wait to get to where you are going. Keep these ideas in your back pocket if you find yourself bored during a layover or any other hours-long wait on your next trip.
