History
Since 1977 Penticton has been a sister city to Ikeda, Japan. Sister Cities are a concept that was developed where cities across the world promote each other’s region and culture to build understanding and friendship among different nations.
The idea of the Penticton Ikeda Japanese Garden was conceptualized in 1993 during the Ikeda delegation’s visit when Mayor Kazuo Oishi gave Penticton the blueprints for a lovely new garden that would represent his home region in Ikeda. Construction for the garden never actually began until 2003.
