What to Consider When Planning a Trip to the Lake District in Autumn

As the leaves start to change colour on the trees and the weather becomes a little cooler, autumn represents the perfect time of year to visit the Lake District. The golden yellows, rusty red and crisp blue skies of the autumnal months are the perfect backdrop. Whether you are planning a walking holiday, a sightseeing tour or simply a gentle, relaxing trip to this stunning area, you will not be disappointed.

Booking accommodation

There is something about autumn that draws visitors to the Lake District, so it is essential to book your accommodation in advance to avoid disappointment. This is one location you do not want to assume you will be able to find a last-minute booking if you turn up on spec. Fortunately, there are plenty of Lake District Hotels to choose from, so you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to booking your accommodation.

Consider the weather

Whilst autumn can certainly offer some fantastic crisp days with clear blue skies and a gentle frost on the ground, the weather can be very changeable. For this reason, layers are the best option when it comes to dressing for the autumnal weather in the Lake District.

You may not need hats or gloves, but it is a good idea to pack them, and if you intend to do some of the higher walks or indeed take one of the lake cruises, you will probably find it a little chillier. A good coat is a must as well , preferably one that is waterproof. Umbrellas may be a practical option in built-up areas, but when out walking, they may easily be caught by the wind.

One thing that anyone visiting the Lake District in autumn with the intention of walking should invest in is a good pair of walking boots, not shoes. These will not only keep feet dry and provide a good level of grip on muddier paths, but they will also help to protect your ankle in the event of a path being slippery. It is important to stay safe whilst walking

Don’t forget a good rucksack, as you will need something to carry those layers you don’t need when you set off for the day.

Plan your days

Whilst the Lake District is still a popular tourist destination during the autumn months, you may find that there are changes to many of the opening hours and timetables for some of the places that you may want to visit. To avoid disappointment, it can be a good idea to plan out the places you want to visit before you travel. This will ensure that you avoid those days when popular attractions are either closed or operating at reduced hours. The timetables for the lake cruises and things like the steam railways often have seasonal changes.

Plan your activities

Unfortunately, stunning as the Lake District is, it often rains. Whilst a coat is a good idea if it is colder, you may also want to bring a waterproof with you – something that folds up small and can be packed into your rucksack “just in case”. If you do forget to bring a waterproof, or indeed any other outdoor garment, then don’t worry, as there is one thing you will find an abundance of in the Lake District, and that is shops stocking outdoor and walking clothing.

You may also want to make sure that you have a few wet weather activities planned, as well as some for drier weather. This will save you time each day and allow you to get the very most out of your trip.
