Stay Safe This Winter at The Parthenon: Tips to Prevent Slip-and-Fall Accidents

The Parthenon in Nashville is a wonderful place to visit during the winter months to see the building illuminated at night and take in the educational exhibits and programs. As well as the full-size replica of the original Greek Parthenon, there is also an art museum containing 63 paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries.

It’s important to be aware, however, that winter weather can also make walkways icy and increase the risk of slip and fall accidents in Nashville. Use caution when visiting to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time.

Check the Forecast

Keep an eye on the weather before heading out to the Parthenon. Nashville gets around 4.7 inches of snow each year and January is the snowiest month. In March 1892, 21.5 inches of snow fell in one month, but it’s not usually that bad.

If freezing rain or snow is expected, walkways could become slick. Consider delaying your visit until the conditions improve if ice is forecasted. Check the Parthenon's social media and website for any updates on closures or hazards.

Wear Proper Footwear

Around 17,000 people die because of snow and ice-related falls each year. Leave your smooth-soled shoes at home and opt for footwear with good traction. Boots, sport shoes, and slip-on ice cleats provide the grip you need to walk securely on snow and ice. Avoid heels or leather soles that could lead to slips. Have a bag or backpack to stash your winter boots so you can change into regular shoes once inside.

Take it Slow

Don't rush when entering or exiting the building. Walk carefully and deliberately, taking small strides for stability. Go slow when transitioning from the plaza to the steps and ramps. Use handrails whenever possible for balance. If you feel unsteady, stop and readjust your footing before continuing.

Watch Your Step

Keep your eyes peeled for any icy patches or snow buildup on stairs, ramps, or walkways. Snow can obscure tripping hazards and hide the true walking surface. Proceed with caution in these areas and point out any slick spots to those with you. Report any unaddressed hazards to Parthenon staff.

Stay in Lit Areas

Stick to well-lit paths around the Parthenon at night. Dimly lit or dark areas can obscure slick surfaces and trip hazards. Carry a small flashlight if you will be walking the grounds after sunset to illuminate your path.

Travel in Pairs or Groups

Having others with you makes it less likely you'll take a bad fall alone if you slip en route. Friends or family members can lend a hand to keep each other steady. Avoid walking alone at night when winter conditions worsen.

Take Breaks Indoors

If you start to feel fatigued, you have numb toes, or you feel unsteady, head inside the Parthenon to warm up and sit down. The museum and gift shop offer plenty of places to take a break from the cold before continuing your visit. Listen to your body and rest when needed.

Report Hazards

Alert Parthenon staff right away if you notice any unaddressed slipping dangers like ice buildup or uncleared snow. Your feedback helps them respond promptly to improve safety. If you take a fall, no matter how minor, be sure to report it and seek any medical care needed. And if you feel your safety concerns were ignored before you fell, consult an injury law firm for advice.

Exercise caution this winter and use these tips to prevent slips and falls during your time at the Parthenon.
