Summer Travel and Eye Health Tips

Summer Travel and Eye Health Tips

The summer period is the hottest one of the year (well, at least for the countries above the equator) which besides the hot temperatures also means high levels of humidity. Both factors are not the best possible for our skin, eyes, and breath.

Especially, if someone adds that due to the more favorable weather we tend to travel more, and also visit foreign countries which are characterized for their Mediterranean climate and renown for amazing beaches and crystal-clear water (such as Greece, Spain, Italy, etc), maintaining a good skin and eye health is more challenging.

In order to achieve preserving our eye health, due to the summerish exposure plus the traveling disorganization, it would be helpful to imply the following tips:

1. Protection

Three rules are to be applied. Firstly, always wear a pair of sunglasses, with sufficient protection against all harmful types of sun radiation, which means 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Secondly, the sun is not the only enemy during the summer period for your eyes. Try limiting your eyes’ direct exposure to chlorinated water (swimming pools) and use swim goggles. Besides the dryness this type of water causes, you are also putting yourself at higher risk for bacteria.

Last, protect as well the sensitive skin eye area, by using your daily eye cream.

2. Hygiene Routine

Travel packing has never been one of everyone’s favorite activities. Traveling only with hand luggage puts the additional restriction of a 100mL limit for your liquid packages, something that increases the difficulty level for choosing the most necessary beauty and care products. Although, the ones connected with your health should not be negotiable. Or, you can make market research for finding out if it’s financially profitable to buy some important items in your hosting country.

Anyway, what is there on the top of your travel make-up bag? Contact lenses cleansing along with a spare pair of them or a spare pair of glasses (if wearing) and eye drops, for both keeping your eyes hydrating and also causing artificial tears for removing external germs and avoiding infections. Add also a microfiber cloth for cleaning properly your sunglasses’ lens.

3. Personal Health

We should not forget that eye health is just a part of our overall health situations and more precisely one of the most sensitive. When on vacation, with the time available being limited, the options endless, and FOMO occasionally dominating us, it is very possible that we forget some very essential self-care procedures.

Your body’s hydration situation is highly depicted in your eyes and skin. Sure, eye drops could be helpful in such cases, but should not be considered as a substitute for natural sources. Therefore, drink enough amount of water, and keep aligned to a reasonable amount of alcohol consumption. Also, allow your body to be rested enough, by enjoying a good night's sleep.
