Dubrovnik is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a famous walled city with a population of just 43,000 people. In 1979, it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, which recognized the charming medieval architecture and fortified old town. It survived an earthquake in 1667 which almost destroyed the entire city, and in 1991 survived the civil war. It was besieged for seven months during the Croatian War of Independence, but significant restoration work has seen it become a primary destination for tourists in Croatia.
