Your Guide to a Long-Haul Flight With Kids

Are you about to make your dream of jetting off to far-flung shores a reality? If so, you might be feeling excited about your big trip. After the events of the last few years, it’s likely that you’re ready to step aboard that plane and get away from the UK for a week or two.

But if you’re going to be travelling with your kids, you might be trying to work out how you’ll tackle the challenges that you might face – especially if this is the first time your little ones have flown and they’re feeling excited.

There are some ideas you might want to try in order to make your long flight as stress-free as possible. Here are some tips to inspire you.

Be early

Checking in early will give you time to calmly make your way through the airport. You might even be able to check in beforehand so you’ll just need to go through security and check in your luggage.

By doing as much as you can as early as possible, you can take the time to work out where the changing facilities are, for example. Or you might need to pick up the formula for your baby that you ordered beforehand – although you can bring your own. By not rushing, you can do everything you need to do as a family without feeling frazzled.

Another bonus of doing this is that you might tire your children out for the flight. The buzz of being in an airport might wear off after they’ve waited around for a while.

Distract them

As with any situation where your kids can become giddy, distracting them could be the key to keeping them settled. Bring their favorite books and toys from home. You might also want to bring their tablet to keep them busy.

New toys could work well too. The novelty of having something different to play with might see you through a good chunk of the flight where they’re not sleeping. You might be able to bag a bargain. For example, retailers such as Smyths Toys offer NHS discounts.

Keep them comfortable

Dress them in comfortable clothes. Layers are a good idea as the plane might be chilly but it can be warm when you land, depending on where you’re heading to. Travel pillows could encourage them to have a snooze too.

You’ll know this already, but snacks and water are also essential for both their comfort and your own – after all, it’s likely you’re used to having little people asking for food!

Soothe them

This is a big thing for your children to do. A flight is nothing like any other type of travel and it can be exciting and also daunting. Do what you need to do to settle them, whether that’s taking them to a quiet part of the plane such as the toilet, or playing their favorite song through their earphones.

It’s easy to worry about other people and how they’ll react but try to ignore other passengers. After all, your kids are your priority.

Ready to fly? Enjoy your trip!
