History of Bacalar
Historically, Bacalar has been a settlement since the pre-Hispanic era and goes back to around 435 AD. The city you see today was founded in 1545 by Francisco de Montejo and its surrounding area is home to several ancient Mayan ruins, including Kawilal Silum, Chacchoben, Kohunlich, and Dzibanche. It is believed that these settlements were part of the great trade networks between Central Mexico and Yucatan during the colonial period. In 1848, Bacalar became a municipality of Quintana Roo after it gained independence from Spain. Today it remains an important cultural center both for locals and tourists alike!

How to Get to Bacalar
The easiest way to get to Bacalar would be to fly into Cancun International Airport and then rent a car or take a bus from there, which typically takes around 5 hours. These buses are called ADO buses and are quite luxurious, see here how to book your bus from Cancun to Bacalar. If you’re already in Playa del Carmen then you’ll only be 4 hours away and Tulum would be 2.5 hours away. Alternatively, you could also take a direct bus from Mexico City to Bacalar if you’re coming from that direction. Another great option is to fly into Chetumal International Airport and then you’ll be only 45 minutes from Bacalar.

What Is So Special About the Bacalar Lagoon?
Bacalar Lagoon is a picturesque natural wonder. What makes this lagoon so special is its turquoise water that appears to change color depending on the time of day and the sun's angle. It is also incredibly deep, with depths reaching up to 90 meters, and its sandy white bottom creates a beautiful contrast with the blue-green water. Some of the most well-known pieces are located in the historic center of town, such as a large mural by artist Kokime on Calle La Libertad featuring abstract figures and a vivid color palette. There's also an interactive sculpture called “La Onda” which was created by local artist Santiago Amarilla in 2015 and features a series of suspended metal pipes that visitors can interact with depending on their height or preference. At these beach clubs, you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and other water sports. Laguna Bacalar (the Seven Colors Lagoon)
This stunningly clear body of water is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and other watersports. There are some excellent boat tours available on the Bacalar Lagoon that are fairly cheap compared to other areas in Quintana Roo. You can take a private tour, or join a group boat tour which will usually include visits to nearby cenotes, Cenote Esmerelda, and Cenote Cocolitos. Other parts of the tour will include stops at Isla de Los Pijaros (Bird Island) and the famous Canal de Los Piratas (Pirates Canal) which was once used by pirates to enter the lagoon and attack the Spanish and the local villagers. If you're looking for something more leisurely, there are also sunset cruises and sightseeing trips with local guides that provide an opportunity to explore the lagoon's wildlife and scenery.

A Spanish colonial fort turned museum from the 1700s that can be entered for a small fee. The fortress provides visitors with a view of Bacalar's storied past as well as boasting picturesque views of the city and the lagoon. The Fuerte de San Felipe Bacalar is located in the center of the city and was built during the 18th century by Spanish authorities as part of their colonial fortification system to protect against pirates and other invaders. The site features a large stone wall, multiple bastions, and several buildings including an original chapel which still exists today. It is classified as one of the best-preserved fortifications from this period in Latin America and has been designated as a historical monument for its importance to local history.

These natural sinkholes filled with fresh water are great spots to explore and take a refreshing dip.
Cenote Azul is one of the largest and deepest cenotes in the region coming in at a whopping 200 meters wide and 90 meters deep. This natural sinkhole was formed thousands of years ago by a limestone cave system that collapsed over time. It features warm crystal-clear blue waters and is loaded with interesting tropical freshwater fish, making it ideal for swimmers and snorkelers alike. The area also offers great opportunities for bird-watching or simply relaxing under the shade of the jungle lining its shore.

Sites like Kawilal Silum, Chacchoben, Kohunlich, and Dzibanche offer amazing glimpses into ancient Mayan culture and history. Though close by, these ruins require a tour to get to as there are no actual ruins in Bacalar.
