Beginner's Guide in Choosing the Basic Fishing Equipment
So, you decided to spice up your camping trip with fishing. Maybe you just want to relax and spend some time in nature. Or you want to feel the thrill and excitement of catching big fish and brag about it on social media.
First thing you need is optimal fishing equipment. One that is not too expensive but still serves it's purpose.
What do you need?
First thing is, of course, a fishing rod. Although it is possible to catch a fish only with line and hook, there is no real fun without swinging and casting the bait with a good, long rod.
The second most important piece of fishing equipment is the reel. There are many types and designs of reels but it is fairly easy to choose the one for beginners. The reel holds your line, prevents it from entangling, and helps you cast further and more precisely.
Third is the hook. The type of hook mainly depends on how big fish you want to catch and what type of fishing you prefer.
The fourth and last essential piece of equipment is bait. Different fishes like different types of baits so choose wisely.
Choose fish first and equipment second
Basically, the choice of equipment depends on what kind of fish you want to catch. If you aim for smaller fish like trout, you need lighter equipment. If you want a carp, then you need something really strong and durable because a carp is a big fish that likes to wrestle with fishermen.
Because carp is the most common fish in the world and every fisherman wants to catch one, we will assume that you want it too.
How to choose fishing rod?
There are two types of rods, telescopic and multi-piece. Although multi-piece rods are more durable, telescopic are more convenient. They take less space and can be deployed much faster and easier.
So, for a beginner, a telescopic rod should be the choice.
Sionce you are going after carp, you need a longer rod that can cast the bait in deeper water. Rod with a length of 4 meters should suffice.
How to choose the right reel?
Reels are the most expensive part of fishing equipment and there are many designs with many different options. But that only matters for professionals. Beginners and casual fishermen can choose between two options.
A baitcasting reel is more expensive and requires some practice to prevent the line from becoming entangled in a so-called „bird's nest”. On the other side, they provide better accuracy and longer casting distance. Choose this if you are ready for some practice before going to the water.
Spinning reels are by far the most used type of reel. From beginners to professionals, everybody likes them. They are easy to use with decent accuracy and range.
Choose a middle-priced spinning reel and you will not be disappointed.
At Myrtleford Sports and Toys, they take immense pride in their commitment to offering Australian customers exceptional fishing reels, sports apparel, footwear, accessories, and camping gear. Whether you prefer the convenience of online shopping or the personalized experience of visiting their physical store, they strive to exceed your expectations in every aspect.
The hook
For a beginner, it is best to use wide-gap hook. These hooks have a wide gap between the point and the shank, which allows for a better hook set when the carp takes the bait. It gives the hook more space to catch hold of the fish's mouth, increasing your chances of a successful hookset.
Hook sizes typically range from larger numbers (e.g., 6) to smaller numbers (e.g., 10). The smaller the number, the larger the hook. For beginners, sizes 6 to 10 are a good starting point for carp fishing. They can handle a variety of bait sizes and can catch both smaller and larger carp.
The bait for water pig
Carps are known as „water pigs” because they are not very picky about food. So, use one of these baits and the carp will be satisfied.
Boilies are perhaps the most popular bait for carp fishing. They are round, hard, and come in various flavors and colors. Boilies can be hair-rigged (attached to the hook with a hair rig) to allow the carp to suck them into their mouths without feeling the hook. Different flavors and sizes of boilies can be used to match local preferences and conditions.
Maggots, worms, and other live baits can be very effective for carp, especially when fishing for smaller specimens. Use them on a hook or as part of a ground bait mix.

It is not hard to choose the right fishing gear. Of course, when you get addicted to this sport, there will be enough opportunity to spend money on better and more interesting equipment.
For now, a good rod and reel combo will suffice. You may also need a good and comfortable chair, a box for gear, and somewhere to put your catch.
