Sovereign Park, Vernon
About Sovereign Park, Kalamalka Lake, BC
Sovereign Park was aptly named to honor Dr. Arthur Ellison “Art” Sovereign who was a pediatrician and prominent and well-known citizen of the region. The park provides visitors with a large green space and a lovely beach that is situated along the edge of exquisite Kalamalka Lake in Vernon, British Columbia. The lake is part of a larger region of desert-like environment called the Okanagan Valley which is located in British Columbia, Canada. The Okanagan has great weather that is much milder than most of the rest of Canada and has a near-perfect growing climate that provides excellent conditions for orchards, wineries, and vineyards. The valley tends to have hot and dry summer temperatures with cooler nights which is exactly what the fruits desire to thrive and produce a good yield. The valley boasts over 50 lakes and an abundance of sunshine and as such, it tends to swell with tourists in the summer months.
Sovereign Park is around 10 minutes drive from the city of Vernon in the Coldstream community. It has a much quieter atmosphere than the tourist trap of Kal Beach and has much cleaner water as well. The beach is great for picnics, sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, or SUP paddleboarding and the water is clear allowing you to see right to the bottom in some spots. The park provides beachgoers with several white sand coves that are relatively private and if you happen to get there early enough you should be able to secure a good spot for the day. The park features a large open grassy area with picnic tables, horseshoe pits, bocce ball, volleyball courts, modern washroom facilities, and outdoor showers.
