Located just three kilometers south of the town of El Nido, Palawan, Las Cabanas makes for the perfect departure point for many island hopping activities. The property itself is smack dab in the middle of some of the most picturesque scenery in the Philippines and the entire world. From Las Cabanas, you will be able to arrange one of the multiple boat tours available to visitors and they will pick you up directly on the beach in front of the resort. Boat tours are generally very cheap, especially if you barter with the locals, as opposed to going with the much more expensive resort tours. These tours generally include lunch, but not drinks and I suggest asking if they can bring a cooler and some ice if you’re planning on drinking during the tour.
Scenic limestone islands with sheer vertical cliffs dot the blue sea and create untouched wildlife habitats that can sometimes include a monkey called the Philippine long-tailed macaque.
There are a total of four island hopping tours in El Nido, each one offering a different variation of stops. Our tour included a stop at Papaya Beach, Snake Island, and the Big Lagoon. The Big Lagoon was our last stop on the tour and was the cherry on top of our day. We rented one of the available kayaks and got to paddle around the lagoon through giant cracks and caves with vertical walls jutting straight up out of the azure-colored water. Our driver also stopped at one of the local snorkeling spots and we got to see the brain coral which was teeming with fish.
Snake Island was not a bunch of snakes slithering around on an island as I had once imagined, but instead a gorgeous strip of white sand crossing a bay that resembles the shape of a snake. There is a floating palapa bar on the sand in the middle of the bay, where you could purchase alcoholic beverages and I ended up getting some delicious rum and fresh coconut. We also had an awesome fresh meal prepared by one of our tour guides.
We arrived back from our day tour just in time for an amazing sunset, with a serious buzz of course, not just from the alcohol, but from the fact that we had all witnessed some of the most beautiful sights we had ever seen.
