About Cenote Cocalitos, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Cenote Cocalitos is an incredible natural attraction in the Pueblos Mágicos town of Bacalar, Mexico. It is situated along the edge of one of the country’s largest freshwater lakes, the Bacalar Lagoon. The lagoon is located in one of the southernmost regions known as Costa Maya in the state of Quintana Roo.

At Cenote Cocalitos there is a beach club where one can relax and have fun swimming around in the crystal clear turquoise water, eat at the restaurants, rent kayaks, or snorkel to see the stromatolites. The entrance fee is very cheap and costs only $50 MX ($3.08 CAD - $2.42 USD) for an all-day pass. The club also features swings and hammocks that are partially submerged in the water where visitors can take some amazing photography.

Cenote Cocalitos is perhaps most popular because of the stromatolites that grow around its edge. Stromatolites are ancient organisms that are said to be one of the oldest creatures on earth and could be probably be best described as living rocks. With so many of the organisms living around the cenote, it has been aptly nicknamed the “Sanctuary of the Stromatolites”. The stromatolites are super interesting and are teeming with unique and somewhat vulnerable species of freshwater fish and other small creatures. When exploring the Bacalar Lagoon keep in mind that the Stromatolites are formations of prehistoric life that can be seen in very few places in the world, so be sure not to disturb them.
