About Naramata, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

Naramata is a small lakeside village that is nestled in the heart of the gorgeous Okanagan Valley. The townsite of Naramata sits on the shores of the popular Okanagan Lake in the interior of British Columbia, Canada. The town has a rich history and made its way as an excellent fruit-producing region, owing to its sunny location and the Okanagan’s mostly mild year-round temperatures. Nowadays Naramata is more well-known for its abundance of vineyards and wineries which are quite an attraction in the summertime.

History of Naramata

John Moore Robinson named the town Naramata, after Naramattah, the wife of the great Sioux Indian Chief Big Moose. In the old days, Naramata could only be reached by paddlewheel ferry boats that cruised up and down Okanagan Lake. In 1910 a dirt road was created finally and connected the village to nearby Penticton. In 1915, the Kettle Valley Railway was built and made Naramata a stop along the tracks. This helped the town immensely and brought more opportunities for the local economy.
