History of Peachland
In ancient times before the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by the Okanagan First Nations. These indigenous peoples knew much about the land and how to survive off of it. They also told tales of a mysterious serpent lake monster known as the Ogopogo, which is said to live in an underwater cave across from Peachland near Rattlesnake Island.
The area of Peachland got its beginnings when the Pacific Fur Company created the historic Brigade Trail, which included stops in the region. The trail was the main route for fur traders up until 1858 when the fur industry started to die out and the infamous gold rush began.
In 1898 a man by the name of J.M. Robinson arrived in the area and opened gold mines in the hills above Peachland.
Slowly the hills surrounding Peachland became orchards and were filled with different varieties of fruits, most notably peaches. Eventually, several fruit packing houses were built on the shores of Okanagan Lake. The packing house employees would load sternwheeler boats with fruit and ship the produce around the lake to other communities.
