San Pancho History

The area that is now called San Francisco was inhabited for many millennia by its first indigenous inhabitants called the Tatuan de Nayares people.

Europeans didn’t arrive to the area until 1524 when Don Francisco Cortés de Buenaventura landed and named it Azapan. The Spaniards successfully converted the town to Catholicism and turned the lands into coconut plantations in order to produce the much sought-after coconut oil.
