About Grant Island Bird Sanctuary, Lake Country, BC

Grant Island is located in the gorgeous Okanagan ValleyBritish Columbia, and is inaccessible to the public as it is a protected bird sanctuary. The island is situated about one kilometer from the shores of the community of beautiful Lake Country, BC. It is one of only two islands on Okanagan Lake, Rattlesnake Island is the other and it is located in Okanagan Mountain Park across the lake from the town of Peachland.

Though the island is off-limits to the public it is a neat place to kayak around and check out the 4 different species of squawking seagulls.

History

Grant Island was originally named Nahun Wenox (child of the rock) by the original indigenous First Nations peoples of the Okanagan. They used the island to store their supplies in order to protect them from bears and other raiding tribes.

How to Get There

To get to grant Island you must drive the scenic Carrs Landing Road out to Kopje Regional Park which is between Vernon and Kelowna and from here you can either kayak, paddleboard, or swim to the island.
