Playa Los Muertos is the most popular beach in all of Puerto Vallarta and lies on the beautiful shores of the Bay of Banderas in the Zona Romantica area. It is the vacation destination of many travelers who are visiting the state of Jalisco, Mexico, as there is so much to see and do. It boasts many amazing beachfront resorts that cater to all types of budgets and the beach features a plethora of fun-filled activities for people of all ages. The Zona Romantica area is especially popular among the LGBTQ community and is a great beach vacation for the whole family.

History of Playa Los Muertos

Playa Los Muertos translates directly to Deadman’s Beach or Beach of the Dead and though it sounds creepy, the real history is even more disturbing. The name Playa Los Muertos can be traced back to when the city of Puerto Vallarta went by the name Las Peñas and there were no 5-star resorts or tanned ex-pats lying on the beach. Instead, the beach was the place where merchant pirate ships would land and search for gold and silver in the Sierra Madre mountain range. The name came to fruition on the day when a local indigenous tribe attacked the crew of one of the ships and ended up killing them all and leaving them to rot on the beach.

More About Playa Los Muertos

Los Muertos Beach is the main attraction of Old Vallarta, and as such, it tends to be crowded compared to some of the other beaches in PV. That being said the beach is crowded for good reason, as there are plenty of vendors selling souvenirs, food, drinks, and tickets to tours and other activities. Another attraction of the area is the Los Muertos Pier, which was constructed in 2013. The pier is a work of art that was designed and created by the architect José de Jesús Torres Vega. It is 337 feet long and resembles the shape of a sailboat in the wind. At night the pier lights up with different colors and is a favorite evening stroll for visitors and locals alike. The pier is not only a local attraction but it is also the docking point for the water taxis (panga) that take people to remote villages and inaccessible beaches like Yelapa or Playa Las Animas.

There are plenty of artworks and statues along the Malecon, and at the end of Playa Los Muertos, there is a seahorse statue at the Las Pilitas rock formations, where visitors can get some epic photography. Adventurous types may choose to continue on to a short hiking trail that goes up and over the rock formations and leads to amazing viewpoints and the small but picturesque beach called Playa Amapas.
