Guide to Travel Bucerias
About Bucerias, Nayarit, Mexico
Bucerias Is a colorful Mexican beach town that is located 17 miles from downtown Puerto Vallarta, 4 miles from Nuevo Vallarta, and only minutes from its nearest neighbor La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. It lies on the shores of the gorgeous Bay of Banderas in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. The area is typically referred to as Riviera Nayarit due to the plethora of river systems that flow from the mountains and into the sea. The town has a population of around 16,100, but that number doubles in the winter months when an influx of snowbirds from Canada and the USA head down to escape the cold.
Bucerias boasts a long 5-mile beach called Playa Bucerias that features lovely fine sand and excellent water activities. Some of those activities include swimming, parasailing, surfing, and jet skiing.
The name Bucerias is said to mean “place of divers”, but is not really a Spanish word and may have come from the original indigenous people of the area. Little is known about the history of the area before the Spanish arrived but In the 1940s Bucerias was nothing more than a few little palapas, and some quaint farms that grew corn, sorgo, sesame, peanuts, and fruit.
