Osoyoos Dune
About Osoyoos Dune, Okanagan Valley, BC
The Osoyoos Dune is a beach area situated on beautiful Osoyoos Lake in the world-renowned desert wine region known as the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. The dune is located on the outskirts of the popular beach town of Osoyoos and access requires that you hike through the desert via the Nk’MIp Campgrounds. The land belongs to the local indigenous Okanagan people called the Syilx and is open for public usage.
Hiking Trail
Nk’Mip has plenty of great hiking trails that lead you through picturesque desert landscapes that make it hard to believe that you're in Canada and not Arizona or California. With a stunning backdrop of the lake and the rocky mountains that surround it, this hike through the Okanagan Desert is well worth it. The hike takes only about 30 minutes, but be sure that you bring enough water as Osoyoos can become scorching in the summer and can reach temperatures nearing 40 Celcius or 104 Fahrenheit.
The Dune
Upon arriving at the dune you will be delighted with this odd arrangement of sand that is piled up against the banks of the lake creating the ideal place for fun-filled days at the beach. There are a few trees at the beach which manage to somehow thrive in the sandy environment and provide some much-needed shade in the summertime heat. The beach has nothing in terms of amenities so it is not a great place to bring toddlers generally and sand gets in everything. That being said your older kids will love the beach as they can race each other down the sandy hill, build sandcastles, and splash around in the waters of Canada’s warmest lake.
