Thousand Springs State Park Malad Gorge Unit, Idaho
The Thousand Springs State Park Malad Gorge Unit is part of a 451-acre protected area that is located just off Interstate 84 near the town of Hagerman, Idaho. It is very easy to miss the park from the highway and most people drive right over the bridge that crosses the gorge without even noticing. Malad Gorge is a spectacular natural geologic feature and viewpoint that is open to the public for hiking, picnicking, and day use.

In the rainy season, the Malad River crashes down into the aptly named Devils Washbowl, then cuts deeply into the magnificent 250-foot gorge, eventually making its way to the Snake River which is around 2.5 miles away. The most spectacular views of the Malad Gorge can be seen while standing on the large metal walking bridge that crosses the canyon. You can enjoy hiking the rim of the gorge and discover all the unique vistas that the park has to offer. Looking down into the canyon you’ll be entranced by the crystal-clear springs that leave behind little ponds and streams. The other entrances of Thousand Spring State Park offer amazing photography opportunities and from Ritter Island, visitors will have a perfect site of the springs. At Box Canyon State Park visitors can enjoy the magnificent freshwater springs and pools of turquoise blue water.
How Deep is the Malad Gorge
The Malad Gorge is around 175 feet, but the canyon becomes deeper to 250 feet as it gets closer to the Snake River.
