This sleepy hillside village comes alive in the summer, but in the winter it basically shuts down. We happened to visit in October and it had already gone quiet. Of course, there are positives and negatives to that as well. The positives were that we pretty much had the entire town all to ourselves, aside from a few wanderers and we got to explore the prehistoric caves without a bunch of people everywhere. Negatives included the fact that barely anything was open at the time of our visit, which was a bit of a bummer because we originally wanted to check out the markets and do some shopping.

In Cala Sant Vicenc there are four total coves, or “calas” as they are called in the local Catalan language and three of those coves have small beaches where you can enjoy some perfect snorkeling conditions in the pristine turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. We chose not to swim because it was October and the water was chilly, that being said there were some ballsy folks out there swimming around. We also saw jellyfish warning signs all over the place and upon closer inspection, we realized that the water was full of them and I’m talking “FULL”, which made those ballsy people’s nuts seem even larger.

The scenery around the village is jaw-dropping and I mean literally jaw-dropping like a fly might have flown into my esophagus and I wouldn’t even be surprised. The landscape around Cala Sant Vicenc is so rugged that it’s hard to imagine how even the conception of a town in this location would have come about.

Cuevas de l'Alzinaret

The Cuevas de l'Alzinaret is situated just a few blocks from the beach and is definitely well worth a visit. You will need to get very low to the ground in order to climb through the entrance of the caves, so agility is a must to enjoy the caves to the fullest. It is said that the caves are part of a necropolis, where ancient peoples must have buried their dead and practiced religious rituals. Inside some of the caves, you will see what to me looks like a place of worship and there are several chambers off to the sides. There are spots cut into the walls where you can still see the 4000-year-old soot caused by what must have been torches. My guess is that ancient people used the caves and the sheer ruggedness of the area as a means of protection against invaders and they would most likely have retreated back into the caves when they spotted ships coming into the cove.
